Anne Lister Poetry Workshops Series 1

Let’s discuss and write about lesbianism – what it means, how it affects our lives, and link this to the life and world of 19th century lesbian, Anne Lister.

Poetry written by lesbians, as well as extracts from the diaries of Anne Lister, will be used as inspiration. It will be of benefit if you can familiarise yourself with Anne Lister’s diaries and/or the BBC Gentleman Jack TV series.

Ideas discussed will include what makes an effective and exciting image? How do we know when a poem is finished? Which form is best? Fun writing exercises, guided writing and exploring a variety of poetic techniques will support, develop, and really drive your writing forward.

These engaging and exciting workshops are all about celebrating you, your writing, lesbianism and Anne Lister.

Stare at the blank page no longer – be inspired to get creative and write. And let’s use the incredible Anne Lister as our focus and inspirational muse.

These workshops are all about celebrating you and your writing. Whether you’re a new poet or a published poet – come along, this workshop is for you.

In tonight’s workshop we are going to look at Anne’s relationship with one of her long term lovers, Isabella Norcliffe (Tib). Isabella, Anne’s second lover and wealthy heiress of Langton Hall, York, was Anne’s kind of woman. This was a woman who took snuff, drank plenty, travelled, enjoyed country sports and loved Anne with a passion. Her story is one of wealth and heartache, devotion and betrayal.

And in our poetry technique goody bag tonight, we’ll be discussing the use of direct speech and conversation within our writing. It’s a fabulous technique to use and really opens up the poem into something else.

Poetry written by lesbians, as well as extracts from the diaries of Anne Lister will be used as stimulus. I’ll also be sending out a short biography of Isabella Norcliffe prior to the workshop.

Fun writing exercises, guided writing, together with a focus on direct speech, will support, develop, and really drive your writing forward.

Let’s celebrate you, your writing, and Anne Lister.

In tonight’s workshop we will be looking at Anne and her relationship with the love of her life, Mariana Lawton (nee Belcombe). If you thought Romeo and Juliet was tragic, their story is even more so. Money, that great divider and particularly so in 1816, was to become the poison, the dagger, the slayer of their love.

And in our poetry technique goody bag tonight we have Visual Impact. How can we make a poem stand out physically, catch the eye and the tongue? Be prepared to throw out the rule book and be free!

Poetry written by lesbians, as well as extracts from the diaries of Anne Lister, will be used as inspiration. I’ll also send you a short biography of Mariana Lawton (nee Belcombe) before the workshop.

Who did Anne really love and why did she leave a trail of broken hearts? Today we will write about love. And anti-love. What is love? How do we define it?
